The Cosmetology Course prepares graduates for the New Hampshire State Board examinations to become a licensed cosmetologist.
The course provides the general skills of hairdressing and their practical salon applications for entry level positions in the field of cosmetology.
In New Hampshire Reciprocity is available with other states.
Cosmetology is the art and science of adornment through care and treatment of the hair, nails and skin. The cosmetology course includes such subjects as shampooing, scalp treatments, haircutting, permanent waving, manicuring and pedicuring, chemistry of the hair, hair relaxing, hair styling, hair coloring, hair removal, facials, and makeup. Actual practice in manipulative skills is stressed. Related subjects include the study of personal hygiene, public health, anatomy of the head, face, neck, hands and feet, bacteriology, psychology, salon ethics, personality development and salesmanship.
The students work on mannequins and each other in practice periods until they have acquired sufficient skill to give treatments to the public in the school clinic under the supervision of an instructor after approximately 200 hours of training. The services offered to the public in the Student Design Studio afford the students an opportunity to practice and develop cosmetology and interpersonal skills under the guidance and supervision of an instructor.
Student Design Studio customers are charged a fee for cosmetology services provided by the students.
Income from clinic services pay part of the school operating expenses and in effect help to reduce student tuition costs.
Students receive no payment for work they do as part of the clinic training experience.
● Class size is limited.
This means more individual attention, and more opportunities to work with clients for real hands on experience.
Actual practical knowledge is the best preparation for employment you can receive.
● Enjoy a well paying career in 12-14 months.
A full time student attends school 32 hours a week.
If you need a schedule tailored to your specific needs, we can discuss that with you.
Your career development and goals are our major concern.
● Licensed cosmetologists can earn as much as $30,000 to $50,000 a year.
That is an excellent return on your educational dollar invested. Earning potential is directly related to the salon you work in and its location, the client base you serve, your individual abilities and skill level, and your desire to advance in your profession.
Licensing For Out Of State Students
Maine Residents
The State of Maine requires the same number of hours training as New Hampshire – 1500 – therefore Maine and New Hampshire share licensing reciprocity. When you graduate from PBSHD and pass the NH licensing examinations you will receive a valid NH license. You can then apply for a Maine cosmetology license
Massachusetts Residents
The Commonwealth of Massachusetts requires 1000 hours of training for a cosmetology “apprentice” license. You are required to serve two (2) years of apprenticeship. If you complete the 1500 clock hour cosmetology program and become licensed in NH you can obtain a license by reciprocity in Massachusetts. Massachusetts will grant you one year of apprenticeship for the additional 500 hours of training you completed.
