PORTSMOUTH — Portsmouth Beauty School, owned and operated by Nicole Nardello Lawton, is a newly updated, thriving, downtown school and salon, with well educated students and a loyal following of clients.

Portsmouth Beauty School opened in the mid-1950s by Lawton's grandfather, and most of those years were spent on the first floor of the Congress Street location, but in 2003 the school moved up to the second floor into a newly renovated, larger space. Now the school and salon is bright and spacious.

"We wanted to give them (the students) a really wonderful place to learn in, a very nice, warm, inviting environment. Also, the clients that come to the student's salon don't see your typical clinical student area, so they are more relaxed. It is run more like a salon atmosphere," said Lawton.

Although the students are the ones giving the haircuts and other various salon treatments, the instructors are always on the floor, watching the students and answering questions.

Lawton said Portsmouth Beauty School is a learning environment at all times, "From the moment they (the students) step in, in the morning, to the moment they leave at night."

Lawton said the school's reputation for excellence is wide-reaching, and she has students from Berlin and from Burlington, Vt., attending her school.

And now more than ever people are looking to enroll at Portsmouth Beauty School. People are looking to reeducate themselves, or find a fall-back position if what they are currently doing doesn't continue to work out for them.

"We have classes six times a year, and September (enrollment) is looking incredibly large, break-the-record large," said Lawton.

Portsmouth Beauty School is seeing more clients, too, according to Lawton. She said more people are interested in finding cheaper, alternative ways to keep themselves looking good.

"We have been adorning ourselves since the beginning of time. People are always looking to make sure they are well kept, well presented, etc., so this industry helps individuals find their style, keep their style, and change that style with the times."

The prices at Portsmouth Beauty School are cheaper than many salons, with $32 perms and $14 facials, and because it is a school, and students need a certain amount of hours on different services and techniques, there are specials, such as $5 haircuts.

Lawton said sometimes people come to the salon for the first time because of pricing, or perhaps they have heard about the school's reputation, but once a client comes in, they are bound to come back.

"We will hook them once they (the client) are here. They love us, the students are great, they are well informed, they are creative, and they are excited about this industry and it shows in their work."

Lawton takes great pride in her work, the history of the school and her family. She also loves seeing the growth of the school, and the clients that support the school, and the downtown Portsmouth community.

"Personally I think we are the best choice for people to choose to receive their education, from atmosphere to the well-educated instructors, to the wonderful clients that come in year, after year, and support my students. I am so appreciative to them, to continue to do that for us, to continue to support the local economy, support these businesses in downtown Portsmouth, we are part of that."

Message from the Under Secretary of Education

I am pleased to announce the launch of an exciting, innovative new resource—www.college.gov. College.gov was designed by students for students and features first-person accounts of students who overcame challenges to going to college such as peer pressure, lack of family support, and financial barriers. It provides relevant, comprehensive information about why to go, how to go, and how to pay for college or other postsecondary education programs. Young people who may not have considered higher education a viable option will be engaged, informed, and inspired to create their own "roadmap" to college.

We want to make sure that all students are aware of college.gov, and we need your help to make that happen.
To support this site, you can:
• Establish a link to college.gov on your website (preferably your home page)
• Notify your staff, membership or constituents about college.gov through email
• Contact Department of Education staff at college@ed.gov if you need more information or have speaking or exhibiting opportunities with your organization at which we may introduce college.gov

Please join with me in ensuring all students learn about this resource.
